Jul 2, 2009 · Doing a 408 conversion and need to know if I need a new crank. The "M" has a shorter stroke. I was told a while back that to use 400 pistons you have to use 400 rods because of the lengths between the 351M and 400 were different. But the same crank could be used as long as you change the pistons and rods. The rods are the same. It is natural for a right handed person to crank to the right, therefore with a crank position in the front of the engine and the engine has a hole with a milled slot in the front, as was normal on most cars, the engine has to turn clockwise.
